Isohypse

A line of equal height on a geopotential map. Geopotential maps assumes the earth is perfectly flat and a perfect sphere.

Isotherms

Lines of equal temperature, shown in either a 2,4,5 or 10 degree increment. Commonly used on surface charts and from 500 millibars and lower. Isotherms are used to find regions with warm air advection and cold air advection as well as short waves, fronts, temperature gradient boundaries, and instability zones.

Fiction Map

Maps based on a fictional world are still valid they depict information of fantasy. Though it is based on fantasy it is valid and useful for disseminating information.

Windrose

A windrose is used to show the information about the distributions of wind speeds, and the frequency of the varying wind directions.
A wind rose may also be drawn for 8 or 16 sectors, but 12 sectors tend to be the standard set by the European Wind Atlas.

The radius of the wide outermost wedges gives the relative frequency of each of the wind directions, or per cent of the time is the wind blowing from that direction.

The second wedge tells you how much each sector contributes to the average wind speed at our particular location by taking the the same information from the first wedges then multiplying each by the average wind speed in each particular direction. The result is then normalised to add up to 100 per cent.

The innermost (red) wedgetells you how much each sector contributes to the energy content of the wind at our particular location by again taking the data of the first this time multiplying it by the cube of the wind speed in each particular location. The result is then normalised to add up to 100 per cent.

Planimetric Map

Planimetric map: a map that is two-dimensional leaving out any information of the position of an point on the third dimensional plain. So that a point located at 3000’ would appear on the same plain (or plane) and a point at -30’.

Star Plots

A star plot is a graphical data analysis method used for examining the relative behavior of all variables in a multivariate data set. Here is a star plot of crime rates in the United States.

Correlation Matrix

A correlation matrix lists the variable names down the first column and across the first row. In every correlation matrix there are two triangles that are the values below and to the left of the diagonal and above and to the right of the diagonal. The diagonal of a correlation matrix always consists of ones. A correlation matrix is always a symmetric matrix.
